Middle School Boys

Lunch went about as usual. Sat at a table with one other female and six males. Remember - the engineering world. So somehow we start talking about funny things from our youth. The one guy (my age - 38) mentions that when he was in junior high (guess they call it middle school now) and high school, he was way into online groups, trying to hack into computers.
What? They had the internet back then? We're talking 1982 here. Um, OK. He then admits hacking into anywhere was way un-fun as you really couldn't do things like Matthew Broderick did in War Games. (BTW, I loved that movie). And he admits, there was no hot girl watching him hack into these places. In fact, the internet world back them was utterly void of females.
So why did he stop? According to him, he discovered he liked girls way better than computers and never looked back.
So then he tells the funny story about how (back in middle school once again), someone tells him and his friends about a great phone number you could call to hear recordings of girls. Yep, you just dial One Nine hundred. And so he and his friends went to his house and each called over and over again for days on end. All was fine until his parents got the $400 phone bill.

So why am I mentioning this? Aside from the fact I almost fell out of my chair laughing, I think it's great to see this insight into the middle school boy's mind.

Yes, you need to get out more. The Refreshments were amazing. I also loved Collective Soul.

And middles school boys are adorable. LOL

Collective Soul I could definitely go for. They have some rockin' music!

Was that the movie (WAR GAMES) where the computer asks "Would you like to play a game?"......."How about thermal nucular destruction? (or something on that order)

Strangely, if it is, I was thinking about it a couple days ago and couldn't remember the name.

If it isn't, just I'm strange.

Oh, and you are brave trying to delve into the middle-grade male mind!

It was that movie. He hacks into the school and changes the girl's grade and she's all enamored.

I heard a funny list today also. Something like 2008: Top ten reasons why a Nerd is going to steal your girlfriend this year.
I'll have to look for it and get the link.

My husband's an engineer. This finally explains some many things about him I just didn't get!

I was recently strolling down memory lane with some friends about how when we were teens, we used to give and receive crank phone calls. Caller ID today has taken all the fun out of that!

Funny stories. They had those numbers back then? How did his parents make him pay back the $400?

A good friend of mine just got a cell phone bill for over $1,000--all because of her sixth grader's IM habit.

I always wondered the same thing about crank phone calls, Sheri. How do kids do them now? Call from pay phones? I'm sure of one thing - they will find a way.

And Vivian, not sure how he paid it back, but he said he had to. I had NO idea there were these numbers around WAY back then. I remember party lines where you could get three people on the line.
IMing scares me. First it was 5 cents a piece. Now on my bill it's up to 13 cents each. Next time I renew I'm getting the unlimited $5 plan - only to save myself from worrying about this!

I had a classmate in 6th grade who did the same thing.

Worse, we all found out because his twin brother told us all.

Boys that age are strange creatures...

Yeah, boys are strange, Shelley! And just think - this is what we have to look forward to!
Deep breath.
