Five on a Friday

Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend planned!

My five for the week:

1) Last night read and loved FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX (Nathaniel Fludd, Beastologist) by R.L. LaFevers. I totally recommend it for the 7-10 year old range. My son will LOVE it!
* And on a side note, I'm looking forward to interviewing R.L. LaFevers next month over on The Enchanted Inkpot.

2) We're on season 3 of Star Trek: The Next Generation. You know, this is the season where they change uniforms and get more in touch with the characters' feelings.
* Side note here: My son has determined that he likes Picard over Kirk. Overall, I like TNG better, but Kirk was "The Captain."

3) Critter is still enjoying Austin.

He had a beer the other night (out of a frosty Star Trek mug no less).

Then he spent some quality time with the tortoises, King Tort and Nerfertorti. (That's Nefertorti in the picture below. King Tort was hiding at the time.)

Where will Critter go next? Make sure you visit next Wednesday. I'll be looking for a nice place for him to travel to when he departs Texas.

4) Both kids are at school during the day which is making for some serious good writing time. My near-term goal is to get through the first draft on my current WIP. The finish line is very close!
But yes, please keep in mind this is a first draft. Yikes!

5) I took my antique horseshoe out of the garage and brought it to my office! I figure I'll take all the luck I can get.

Have a great weekend!

Awesome about the lucky horseshoe. I need one of those!

I also need all the seasons of Star Trek the Next Generation. Man oh man I love Star Trek, but that box set is over $300 around here, and just under $200 on Amazon last time I checked. Why do they charge so much! Whaaaa!

And that's great about having so much free time to write! I can't wait for Darcy to hit 1st grade, hehe. Plus I know she'll LOVE school as much as I did!

Critter looks like he is having a blast! And um.. I must find a horseshoe myself...

I have horseshoes all over the place. I need to bring one in to my office. Great thinkin' PJ!

And Critter looks like he's lovin' life at your place. I see that smile on his face. Have a great Labor Day weekend. :)

Cool horseshoe!

I see Nefertorti was more interested in the lettuce. Hope Critter wasn't bent out of shape....

I'm not sure which I envy more, your Star Trek series or your tortoises. :)

And I am a Team Kirk member. Picard was great, but not outrageously awesome like Kirk was.

OoooOOooohhh....I may need to find a horse shoe. And nail it to my forehead? Okay, maybe not.

Of course, if I decide to drink beer out of a Star Trek mug and try walking on my face.....

Enjoy Labor Day weekend!
We have a horseshoe over our door in our garage. Every bit helps! :)

Everyone should have a lucky horseshoe, Michelle! We got ST:TNG last year as a Christmas present. This year we'll ask for probably Deep Space Nine.

Yes, find a horseshoe, T. Anne! Critter highly recommends them :)

Totally, Robyn! Critter does have a great smile doesn't he.

LOL, Adrienne! Nefertorti is all about the lettuce. She runs across the habitat as soon as I put it in there.

Right now, I agree with your son...but I think the *best* one is the Kirk from the movie!

PJ Hoover said...

Exactly my thoughts, Miriam. Kirk just exuded that je ne sais quoi. And every episode his shirt came off which is priceless in itself.

The forehead thing sounds painful and not too lucky, Aimee :) Maybe tie a rope on it and hang it around your neck? Hopefully that would do the same or even better!

Every bit totally helps, Kelly! Luck, luck, luck! And hard work :)

Have a great weekend, all!

That movie Kirk was pretty nice, wasn't he, Beth! I think it was a genius move to make it!

Love that cover on Flight of the Phoenix--it's mysterious, adventurous. If a kid isn't drawn to that I don't know what will work.
You are being a superior host to Critter, I'm sure he will hate to leave.
Happy weekend, all.

The cover is awesome, isn't it, Tricia! And the artwork inside is even more endearing.

I can tell Critter is having way more fun than he ever dreamed possible. :0)

It's so perfect that he got to spend time with your tortoises, because Critter's creator LOVES all things turtle. He has several of his own.

YaY critter. I can't wait to see where he gets to go next!

Critter loves it here, Christy! We'll be sad to see him go. But they must fly the coop at some point, right?

I'm with your son. We're just getting ready to start watching Season 3 with our son--my guess is he'll like Data & Geordie the most!

Congrats on pushing through that first draft. :)

I hope you asked Critter for ID--he doesn't look old enough to be drinking!

I'm looking forward to reading Nathaniel Fludd--Robin is brilliant :)

Have a great weekend!

The character interplay starts to get really good in season 3, doesn't it, Becky!

I forgot to ask Critter for his ID, Sherrie. But he is old enough to travel alone.
And you'll love Nathaniel Fludd!

I can't wait to read Robin's new book. Sounds like a great writing week. Can't wait to see what you've done!

There's nothing quite like the original Star Trek. I grew up on it, but I enjoyed TNG better as a series.

Christina Farley said...

Oh I just love your turtle. I saw the latest Star Trek and actually liked it. I was surprised.

B.J. Anderson said...

I love the horseshoe! And the turtle is oh so cute!

PJ Hoover said...

I can't wait for it to be ready for you to see, Vivian! But, oy, it will be a while :)

EXACTLY my thoughts, Lois! The original series just has this saying power.

The latest Star Trek was like Star Trek for the non-Trekkie, Christina. And I loved it, too. So well done!

Thanks, BJ! Lots of good luck going on over here!

Love the horseshoe.

Happy Labor Day! :)

Tabitha said...

Okay, this is too funny...I've got the Star Trek Next Generation series too, and I'm anxiously awaiting the day when my boys are old enough to watch it with me. :)

That's great you're getting in some writing time, and good luck finishing your first draft!!

PJ Hoover said...

Thanks, Keri! And you, too!

I LOVE that my son wants to watch Star Trek, Tabitha! It's like we're sharing a rite of passage.

Kelly H-Y said...

Love the horseshoe! Is Critter old enough to drink beer?! hee, hee :-)

Lenore said...

I agree with Sherrie and kelly - Critter looks like he'd get carded!

PJ Hoover said...

Critter showed me an ID, but I thought it might be fake.
