Feeling the Fear

Normally in my presentations to kids, I try to touch on the subject of fear.
Fear to try new things.
Fear to do things that make us nervous.
Fear of failure.

Fear is one of those things so many of us struggle with. But there is the thought that if we're scared to do something, that's all the more reason we should.

Last week during my presentation at the Red Dirt Book Festival, I touched on fear and put up one of my favorite fear slides, one of General Grievous holding four light sabers.

Have you seen REVENGE OF THE SITH?

I use the quote:
"Feel the fear, and do it anyway."

Afterward, one man in the audience came up to me afterward and gave me his card with his own quote on the back, care of John Wayne:
"Courage is when you know what to expect and saddle up anyway."

I love the quote!

So what have you done recently that pushed your fear limit?

What a great post. I love the quotes. My recent most fearful experience was my first oral argument this summer at the Court of Appeals. I was petrified, but so glad I did it after I was done. Going through experiences like that and surviving makes me realize that if I do get my book published and have to speak at public events that I will be prepared and I will survive.

Love it!! :) Great quote. :)

Love the Star Wars pic and great quotes! I have to say I recently went back to work part time and I somewhat feared it. I was afraid my lil guy would miss me (or more so I'd miss him), I'd have less time for writing and my kids. But it's been great (though it's very flexible)!

Also, I will be querying agents soon. It does make me quite nervous. I know there will be rejections ahead for me, but my hope for a yes or two will keep me going!

Thanks, Natalie! The oral argument is a great example of doing something that scared you. Way to go!

Thanks, Keri!

So glad it went well with the part time work, Kelly! It makes the time spent together even more precious, doesn't it?
And perfect on the querying! So much of publishing looking fear in the eye. But the more we do, the easier it gets.

Those are such great quotes! Thank you for sharing them. Fear. It was hard to shut down my blog for awhile, but I know I've made the right decisions. And it takes courage for anyone to write what's in their heart.

Oh, Michelle, hiatus from your blog is a great example we all saw from you recently! I'm so happy for you!

Great quotes. Fear can be such an immobilizer. I don't think anyone is truly fearless--they just find ways to work around and through the fear.

I know what you mean, Tricia, and that's what I try to tell my kids. Everyone is scared is stuff. But we all have to push through it to grow.

Thanks for visiting!

Writing always pushes my fear limit. Especially when I ask someone to read what I've written. It's so hard to put yourself out there.

It really is, Lois. I always have those nervous thoughts when anyone reads stuff. But when I get feedback that's useful, it's so worth it!

I'm trying really hard these days to let something go, an issue with a family member. It's extremely scary not to try to control the situation, but I'm doing it anyway...

Love this post, PJ! What a great way to get kids thinking (and talking)!!!

PJ Hoover said...

Letting go of control is super hard, Miriam. I struggle with this even about little things around the house. Sending good thoughts your way.

Thanks, Kim! Not to mention kids love Star Wars :)

The bravest thing I've done in months is chaperon the sixth grade dance. I've been playing it safe lately, no querying and only showing my writing to my critique partners. And now it's so close to the holidays that I'm thinking of staying safe a little longer and waiting for the upcoming conferences in Austin and Houston.

PJ Hoover said...

Oh, the chaperoning sounds way cool, Vonna! And you'll have a blast at the conferences! See you there!

"Feel the fear, and do it anyway."
I love that!!!!!
And of course the quote from Mr. Wayne ;)

Great quotes! I love 'em both, but since I ride horses I understand John's quote. I have a wild horse that I don't know what might happen when I hop aboard.

The agent hunt petrifies me. But I'm doin' it anyway. YAY! :)

PJ Hoover said...

I thought the John Wayne quote was great, T. Anne! It's funny how different quotes can say the same thing, but hearing them differently reinforces the ideas for us.

Yay for you and the horses, Robyn! And so exciting about querying. It is really nervously fun, isn't it?

Great quotes! Getting feedback on my work is always scary for me - I'm trying to be braver about it...

PJ Hoover said...

Way to go, Adrienne! It is scary getting feedback but so useful!

What a great quote! I love Star Wars. I guess right now I'm facing my fear in writing the book that I didn't think I could write. But as I'm writing it, I realize that I can do this!

Oh how I wish I could have seen your presentation!!!

Oh I love this post! It's so important to "do it anyway". I wrote a magazine article about circumnavigating Manitoulin Island by kayak and my last sentence was exactly that, when it scares the snickers of you, but you do it anyway!

PJ Hoover said...

I hope the writing is going great, Christina!

I wish you could have been there, too, Kelly!

The snickers!!!! I love this, Terry!

Take care!

i have a problem with fear - I am trying to conquer it. The fear of "what could happen."
