Five on a Friday

I hope everyone's having a great Friday! I can't help but chuckle each time I watch the YouTube video I made on Tuesday. It's the smug look of satisfaction I give at the end that gets me each time. In case you missed it, you can watch it here.
But now the biggest question is what video can I make next. Any ideas (keep it clean)? Cause, you know, making videos is fun!

Okay, my five for the week!

1. I loved my first classroom Skype visit this week! Huge thank you to Beth Revis and her Creative Writing Club for having me!

2. A second huge thank you to Lauren in Arlington, TX for the awesome review of THE EMERALD TABLET! You can read the review here.
My favorite line:
"The Emerald Tablet by P. J. Hoover is definitely one of the best books I've read"
I tend to think Lauren has extremely good taste in books.

3. I've mentioned I'm revising book three (THE NECROPOLIS) and am totally addicted to cutting words. Word count has gone from 83K to 71K and I'm still at it. Sure, I'll add some back in...maybe.
I wonder if I can get the entire novel down to one perfect sentence.

4. If you haven't nominated someone to be a Featured Sweetheart for The Texas Sweethearts' Blog, email us today. Surely there is someone you know deserving. Someone who has really reached out and helped the kidlit world. I thought so!

5. I finished (on audio) THIRTEEN REASONS WHY by Jay Asher. I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it as the perfect book for both parents and kids (middle school and up) to read and discuss. It may be the best discussion book I've yet read.

Have a great weekend! De-clutter one place around the house. Or make some cookies. Or de-clutter and then make some cookies. And have fun!

Making cookies is more fun than de-cluttering - but they both can give a certain level of satisfaction! Have a great weekend!

PJ Hoover said...

So true, Chris! I think the de-cluttering has more long term gratification.

Christine M said...

Things don't seem to stay de-cluttered around here for long. So I'm not sure about long-term gratification. And cookies are just so tasty. (I think I have to do some baking... or maybe de-cluttering.)

PJ Hoover said...

Mmmmm...me too. Because now the seed is planted!

Okay. Okay. I will de-clutter a corner. You're right I will feel better when it's done.
Have a great weekend!
OH! but my word verification is glitz, so I better also put up something festive. Cleaning and decorating it is then.

PJ Hoover said...

Sounds like a perfect weekend, Tricia! Glitz. That's awesome!

I baked some delicious cookies a couple days ago. Now that you mention it, I think I'll go eat one :)

Good luck with getting Necropolis down to one perfect sentence. At least the production cost for that book would be pretty minimal!

It always feels good when you can cut wordy words. I cut about 5000 in two weeks and it felt great. I'm impressed you found so many words to cut.

I think it's so cool that you interviewed with Beth Revis' class. I wanted to do that here but big problem. All my students would be sleeping when hers would be awake!

The Skype visit sounds like fun!!

Happy Friday!! And have a fabulous weekend. :)

PJ Hoover said...

Me, too, Sherrie! And they are downstairs waiting for me to eat. I want to make some of those ones with the Hershey's Kiss in the middle, though.
Yes, low production cost. Quick bathroom read. All the positives.

LOL, Natalie! There are extraneous words everywhere! I'm really excited about all the progress (or de-progress) on it.
Congrats on cutting your own words!

You wouldn't let a little thing like time zone get in your way, would you, Christina?

Do you Skype, Keri? And have a great weekend, too!

Wow, 83K to 71K? Impressive! I love cutting things out. I get into "everything must go" mode and start slashing. Of course, sometime I go a bit too far, but it's still fun. I bet you could make your novel one sentence if you just used a lot of semicolons. :-)

PJ Hoover said...

Oh, I so know what you mean about everything must go, Anna! But it's just so much fun!

Amy Allgeyer Cook said...

PJ, I recently did my first classroom visit, too. Aren't they fun? How cool that you could do one via Skype!!

PJ Hoover said...

I love talking to kids, Amy! they are just perfect!

Trisha Pearson said...

Great video! And, BTW, I love the cover to The Necropolis.

Okay, I'll go tackle that small but growing clutter pile in the kitchen because goodness knows I don't need the temptation of cookies around the house.

Have a great weekend!

PJ Hoover said...

Thank you and Thank you, Trisha!
I'm all set to put up some shelves tomorrow and arrange stuff on them!

C.R. Evers said...

What is this "de-cluttering" you speak of? Sounds evil and "wheel-spining" to me.

Cookies. Always a good idea.

I'm stoked about the Necropolis progress. I just wish I could join in on the publishing fun. You're awesome, girl!

I've been wanting to read 13 Reasons Why! I'm glad to hear it's good.

Also, if you get the whole book down to a sentence, I want to know what it is and how you did it. :)

PJ Hoover said...

Thanks, Christy! Yes - de-cluttering. It's a lot like revisions.

Miriam, it's not so much that I loved the book. It's just a fantastic discussion book and totally worth the read.

Mitch Wallace said...

Hey there PJ! Just ordered your first two books off of Amazon.com. I'm really looking forward to reading them! Woo!

PJ Hoover said...

Hey Mitch! Thank you! I hope you like them! Have a great holiday!

beth said...

We loved having you! Thank you again so much for talking to my students!

PJ Hoover said...

You are so welcome, Beth! It was a blast!

MG Higgins said...

My weekend was all about decluttering. Then recluttering with holiday decorations. Congratulations on all the wonderful things happening in your life--you're an inspiration!

PJ Hoover said...

Aw, thanks, MG! I spent lots of the weekend decluttering, too. Or at least putting up shelves to help in the declutter effort.
So glad you had a nice weekend!

Carrie Harris said...

Yay for cutting lots of words! For some reason, that always gives me a lot of satisfaction. Semi painful satisfaction, but satisfaction nonetheless. :)

lotusgirl said...

I don't want to de-clutter, but I really should. Cookies would be more fun. Plus, then we can eat them.

PJ Hoover said...

It gives me huge satisfaction, Carrie. Cut, cut, cut.

LOL, Lois! I made bread this weekend but no cookies. And I did hang shelves.

Robyn Campbell said...

I shall de-clutter this week. UGH I'm dreading it. I'd rather write. :)

I've been wanting to read Thirteen Reasons Why. Now that's two books you have given me in the same day. (Because I'm a few days late reading your blog.)

ElanaJ said...

I also loved 13 Reasons Why. Great book.

PJ Hoover said...

De-cluttering really seems to free up my mind, Robyn, and put me in a good mood all around.

It was a great discussion book, wasn't it, Elana?

Danyelle said...

*hides from her clutter* O:)

One day, it would be nice to have a magazine house--the kind that stays perfect and clean with no clutter. My reality runs through the house, forgets to pick up their toys, but melt me with their peanut butter kisses. :D

PJ Hoover said...

LOL, Danyelle! A magazine house! I love this! Yes, that would be nice :)

Heather Zundel said...

And isn't it creepy to hear 13 Reasons Why on audio, since it is all about her reading her own story? It was awesome. The only think that could have made it more surreal was is when her voice took over it crackled a little, like a cassette player. I almost think it should be listened to, rather than read.

You Skyped? How cool is that?! I love that concept....how we as authors can more easily do school visits w/out the expense and time burden of a traditional trip. You should do a post on how it worked, how you got it set up etc... I'd be super interested in hearing your experience w/ it.

PJ Hoover said...

I loved listening to it, Heather. I'm so glad I did as opposed to reading the pages. It was perfect.

Great idea, Tess! The Skype was super easy and very fun. I will post more about it in the future!

Kelly H-Y said...

Oh my goodness ... I love seeing the cover of your next book. Is that the final version?!

PJ Hoover said...

I think it is the final version, Kelly! Thanks! I can't forsee a reason it would change, and I hope it doesn't. I really like it!
